Betty Edwards

Betty edwards before and after handout

Betty Edward's

Her first book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" was written in 1978 and became very popular. She has written six books on art. I have learned so much from her books. Not, how to draw better, but why I do the things that I do as a artist. I call her books the "Artist's Bbile".

1st comment I do pastel/pencil/portraits at the shows, and when they say the stick-figure line, I tell them artists have a secret: they draw with the RIGHT side of their brains. I then encourage them to get Betty Edwards' book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (1978)". I have a handout with the book's name and author (they probably would forget the name of the book 10 minutes later). The handout also includes some pictures from her book showing her students at day 1 (stick-figure self-portrait) and at day 30 (a credible self-portrait). Anyone can learn to draw. Just read Betty's books. The world needs more artists!!!!!!!

I call her books the "Artist's bible". I have learned so much from her books about why I do the things I do as an artist. I encourage everyone to read all her art books. Her last book was in 2020, "Drawing on the Dominant Eye: Decoding the Way We Perceive, Create and Learn". All her books, except the first, are divided into 2 parts. The 1st part is her newest art "theory". The second book is the "Drawing on the Right Side of the So you get two books in one. Most libraries have her books to read for free. Her books are very popular.

2nd comment

Betty has written six books. Check them out. Her second book, "Drawing on the Artist Within (1986)" talks about both creativity and modern art. She has retired from teaching at California State University in Long Beach, CA in 1991. Where she taught a art class for "non-artists".

Her first book reveals the secret of the masters, which she never repeats in her following books. The "secret" is that when you look at a master painting, the painting itself causes the viewer's brain to shift to their "right" side. All artists have this ability, but only the masters have it at 100%. Mine is probably around 1%.

Her first book actually saved my life. I thought I was going crazy untill i read her book. In college, as a programmer, I could only draw stick figures. And when I art work it was impossible to do programming.

Leonardo da Vinci was probably the same, he left many unfinished art projects. However, I had Betty's book and Leonardo did not. But, he probably discovered, as I did, if you stop doing rightt side work for awhile, then you art skills will come back.
